St. Lassara's National School, Ballinacarrow, Co. Sligo, Ireland

75th Anniversary

4th Jun 2026
Friday 29th May saw a very special occasion celebrated in St Lassara’s NS in Ballinacarrow.
The pupils, staff, board of management , parents and wider community all came together to
celebrate 75 years in the current school building - the community centre next door originally
housed the school from 1887.
Fr Martin Convey led a school mass where the children brought up symbols of the school, its
history and its achievements and values over the past 75 years. There was a nod to the school’s
marching band and its own 50 year history during the mass as pupils played the accordion and
tin whistle.
After mass was celebrated the parents and other guests - which included 2 of the former
principals Mr Kilcoyne and Ms Curley - returned to the community centre for refreshments and
to look at all the work on the school displayed around the hall.
The whole school congregated at the new garden developed by staff and pupils as a feature for
the 75th anniversary. Here the pupils sang the school song and one of the very first Junior
Infants in 1951 along with the current Junior Infants , revealed a plaque to mark the occasion. Fr
Jim Finan planted an oak tree as well as a time capsule containing profiles of the pupils
detailing their current hopes, dreams and likes.
It was a very special occasion for all involved and it was great to see so many of the school
community there - past and present as well as members of the wider community.
